With a charismatic personality and a passionate spirit, he managed to overcome all forms of repression crystalizing his sentiments on whatever medium possible. He was schooled in the renowned art academy of San Alejandro, in La Habana, Cuba. It was during this time that he embarked on the mission of befriending a subject, who later on became the focal point of his artistic career -- the iconic Caballero de Paris (Gentleman from Paris), homeless Spaniard who adorned the streets of La Habana, circa 1950-70's
Living in an era of limitations in Cuba, Marino learned to adapt to whatever environment became possible for his artistic endeavors. His medium ranges from paper and canvas, to wood and cardboard. Marino's art collection includes a combination of framed work, on canvas and paper, as well as a vast portfolio of drawings , pastels, and acrylics on paper and cardboard.
Marino's greatest inspiration was his desire to learn about diverse cultures, and adopt methods and facets of those cultures through his rich art renderings. Traveling was his passion, and he roamed the world in a series of expeditions all aimed at broadening his desire to learn, grow and live. Marino also drew inspiration from the great

Traveling was his passion, and he roamed the world in a series of expeditions all aimed at broadening his desire to learn, grow and live. Marino also drew inspiration from the great friends he made throughout his life, and the interesting acquaintances he solidified through his journey of life. As an avid storyteller, Marino was not an artistic introvert, instead he was a man full of life, communicative and highly entertaining. Although some of his life was characterized by darker moments, many reflected on some of his pieces, Marino's work depicts vibrancy and color.
Those who remember La Habana, Cuba, during the decades of 1950-70's, will easily recall the iconic figure of a tall, bearded, and obscured man who roamed the streets of the city in a peaceful and mystical way. Self-proclaimed as El Caballero de Paris, this dignified homeless man was born in the province of Galicia, Spain, and his name was Jose Maria Lopez Lledin (1899-1985).
El Caballero de Paris was a rather quiet man, most knew that he was a victim of some form of mental disorder, yet his conduct was always respectful and reserved. He was a gentle soul, who would avoid direct contact with those who approached him. His normal exception was with selected ladies, who on occasion he would extend the courtesy of a fresh flower. His other exception occurred when his life crossed Gilberto Marino.
Marino, during his Academy of San Alejandro days, had the opportunity of coming across El Caballero de Paris, as he moved around the city looking for subjects who would accept to pose as models for his assigned drawings. Through his simple and friendly approach, Marino managed to befriend El Caballero, and magically he embraced the idea of serving as a model for Marino's early sketches.
Through the years, Marino honored those memories of El Caballero de Paris through his artistic renditions. he traveled to Galicia to explore El Caballero's familial history. In Miami, Florida, he worked arduously with the local authorities to rename a well known intersection as El Caballero de Paris Avenue.

"Naciste pintor y desde niño siempre estabas con una carpeta de hojas blancas y un lápiz dibujando, te sentabas en el Malecón de la Habana y te recreabas mucho con tus dibujos. Un día cuando tenías 16 años descubriste una imagen que causó tanta impresión que te obligó a dibujarla y desde entonces se convirtió en tu musa para toda la vida. Fue así que nació en tu pintura El Caballero de París, ese personaje que deambulaba por las calles de La Habana. Lo veías en la calle Reina, en el Prado, Carlos III, Infanta y en el Malecón. Lo pintaste, creaste, y lo recreaste a tu manera mil veces, como Víctor Manuel pintó y recreó a su Gitana tropical. El Caballero de París era Cuba, La Habana y las famosas leyendas de los cubanos. Hoy un tiempo después de tu partida hacia la eternidad mirando tus obras descubrimos tu mensaje estético en ellas. Siempre a través de tu Caballero de París nos estabas pintando a Cuba".
